Where to start

Which hearing service do you need?

You don’t have to figure it out by yourself before you call. If you’re unsure, book a hearing test, and we will tell you where you stand. As a rough guide, ask yourself if any of these apply to you:

  1. My ear feels blocked or muffled

Usually wax, and usually quick to fix with ear wax removal: irrigation, gentle suction or manual removal, whichever suits your ears. Not wax: hearing that dropped suddenly, within hours or overnight. Call us immediately, because a test is the fastest route to treatment. If we are closed, go to the nearest emergency room.

  2. I think my hearing has changed

Start with a hearing test, and we can book you in right away. It is a comprehensive test with a certified hearing instrument specialist. Your results are explained on the spot, and the test is complimentary if you are 55 or older. No obligation, and no sales pitch.

  3. I want to protect my hearing

Custom earplugs are moulded from an impression of your own ear, so they seal properly and stay comfortable all day. Noise, swim, sleep and music, fitted and checked in the clinic.

  4. Someone needs an audiogram from me

For a job, a licence or a workplace program, we run an employment hearing test to the standard your employer or regulator asks for, and provide you with the required documentation.

Your visit

What to expect when you visit

Our clinic is at 7-1100 Golf Links Road in Ancaster, with free parking at the door and a ground-floor entrance. Appointments start on time and aren’t rushed. Every visit begins the same way: we ask what brought you in, we look in your ears, and we explain what we find in plain language before anything else happens.

You will see a hearing instrument specialist, a trained hearing professional who tests hearing and fits and services hearing aids. If we discover an issue that needs a physician, we say so and help you get there.

We see people from all over, including Hamilton, Dundas, Stoney Creek, Waterdown and the Mountain, as well as Burlington, Brantford and Caledonia.

Why it matters

Why does a hearing test matter?

Because hearing loss is gradual, most people wait years before addressing it. Here’s what the evidence says:

  1. Two men over a chess board at a community hall table, one mid-move and the other talking

    Hearing and Cognition

The Lancet Commission on dementia prevention, an international expert review updated in 2024, lists hearing loss among the leading modifiable risk factors for dementia: one you can actually do something about. A large 2023 trial, ACHIEVE, found half the rate of cognitive decline over three years in higher-risk older adults who consistently wore hearing aids. Hearing aids are thought to have a protective effect: they keep the brain and the auditory system stimulated when a hearing loss is present, which researchers believe may reduce the risk of cognitive decline. That is encouraging rather than proof, and it is why a hearing test matters. What the research says

  2. A woman coming down wide stone park steps in autumn, one hand on the rail, turning to answer a friend behind her

    Hearing and falling

Hearing and balance live next door to each other in the inner ear, sharing the same fluid and nerve pathway, and research has found a link between hearing loss and falling. Sound also tells you where you are, so when hearing fades, the brain's picture of the space around you is thinner and staying steady takes more attention. Hearing loss is one fall risk factor that can be addressed directly and early. Hearing loss and falls

  3. Two people leaning in to hear each other over the noise of a busy garden centre, a tray of plants between them

    Hearing and everyday life

Age- and noise-related loss tends to progress over time. This means that following a conversation takes increasingly more effort. What research consistently finds is that the effects of untreated hearing loss on daily life, such as social withdrawal and fatigue, are greater than they need to be. People who use hearing aids report doing better in those areas, and hearing aids help people stay socially connected, which lowers the risk of isolation and low mood. A hearing test tells you where you stand today. About hearing loss
