When to book

Is a tinnitus assessment right for you?

Tinnitus is often described as a ringing, buzzing, hissing or humming sound. It is typically perceived in one or both ears, or as coming from inside the head. It varies in pitch and intensity. When tinnitus is described as bothersome, there are therapies that can help manage it. An assessment is worth booking if your tinnitus:

  • Is present most days
  • Makes it hard to fall asleep or to concentrate
  • Seems louder in quiet rooms
  • Started after exposure to loud noises
  • Started around the time you felt your hearing changed
  • Bothers you even though your hearing seems fine

The appointment

What happens at your tinnitus assessment

  1. A man filling in a short questionnaire on a clipboard in a consulting room chair

    A conversation about your tinnitus

We talk about when your tinnitus started, what it sounds like, and when you notice it most. Together we complete the Tinnitus Functional Index, a standardized questionnaire that measures how much your tinnitus affects your sleep, concentration, mood and daily life.

  2. A woman wearing headphones in a quiet testing room, her thumb on a handheld response button

We test your hearing and match your tinnitus

We conduct a comprehensive assessment, including a thorough examination of outer, middle and inner ear function. We match your tinnitus for pitch and loudness. If wax is identified in the ear canal, we can remove it at the same visit.

  3. A man leaning in to listen to a soft sound from a small speaker on the desk during a sound therapy demonstration

    Sound habituation therapy

Some of our sound therapy recommendations use over-the-ear prescriptive tinnitus technologies. We program these devices in the clinic to demonstrate how sound enrichment and habituation can help you manage your tinnitus.

  4. A woman with her eyes closed, listening through headphones in a quiet room

    Tinnitus management counselling

We discuss daily strategies you can use, such as at-home apps, dietary changes and relaxation therapies.

A tinnitus assessment and management appointment at Hear & Co is $175.

How long is the appointment?

A tinnitus assessment appointment takes approximately 75 minutes.

Are follow-up visits included?

A demo follow-up visit is included in the $175 fee. Further follow-up visits are booked separately at $175 each.

Can you help if my hearing is normal?

Yes. Many people with tinnitus have normal results on a hearing test. The assessment still measures your tinnitus and how it affects you, and sound therapy does not depend on having a hearing loss.

Is this the same as the free hearing test?

No. The complimentary hearing test for anyone 55 and over is a comprehensive hearing test. The tinnitus assessment adds the Tinnitus Functional Index questionnaire, tinnitus pitch and loudness matching, in-clinic sound habituation and take-home demos, and counselling on how best to manage your tinnitus.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book a tinnitus assessment directly, online under Tinnitus Consultation Appointment or by calling 289-246-8005.

Can I demo the prescriptive technology at home?

Yes. You can take the tinnitus devices home to try.
