Who it is for

Who needs an employment hearing test

Many employers and licensing bodies require proof of hearing before they hire, renew or clear you for a role. We regularly test for:

  1. Two pilots in the cockpit of a small unmarked aircraft, headsets on, talking through the checks before a flight

    Aviation

Pilots and air traffic controllers need a hearing assessment as part of the Transport Canada medical assessment. We provide the audiogram your aviation medical examiner needs to complete the certificate.

  2. Two officers in plain dark uniforms talking beside an unmarked vehicle on a quiet city street

    Police

Municipal and provincial police services, including Hamilton Police, the OPP, the OACP, Halton and Niagara, require a hearing test as part of the recruitment medical. We test to the standard listed in your application package and supply the report.

  3. Two officers in plain dark uniforms talking beside an unmarked vehicle on a rural highway shoulder at first light

    RCMP

The RCMP medical requires an audiogram completed by a hearing professional. Bring the RCMP form with you and we will complete it during your appointment.

  4. Two workers in hi-vis and hard hats on a construction site, leaning in to hear each other over the machinery

    Workplace and industrial

Employers in construction, manufacturing, transportation, mining and other noisy industries often require a baseline hearing test at hiring and periodic tests afterward. Ontario's noise regulation makes hearing protection and, in many workplaces, hearing testing part of the employer's obligations. We provide baseline and follow-up audiograms for individuals.

  5. A commercial driver doing the walk around check of a plain white transport truck at first light, talking to a colleague

    Other requirements

Firefighting, paramedic services, commercial driving, military applications, some trades apprenticeships and some immigration medicals also ask for a hearing test. If you have a form, bring it. If you are not sure what standard applies, send us the requirement and we will tell you whether we can meet it.

The test

What the test covers

An employment hearing test is a full pure tone audiogram: your hearing thresholds at each pitch in each ear, measured in a sound-treated booth with calibrated equipment. Where the requirement asks for it, we add speech testing and a check of the eardrum and middle ear. The whole appointment takes about 30 minutes.

Before you come:

  • Avoid loud noise for 24 hours beforehand. Recent noise exposure can temporarily lower your results.
  • Bring the form or the written requirement from your employer or regulator.
  • Bring photo ID.
  • If you have a cold or a blocked ear, tell us when you book. Wax or congestion can affect results, and we can remove wax first, as a separate service with its own fee ($95 per session, whether we treat one ear or both).

Paperwork

Documentation you receive

Your audiogram and signed report are emailed to you the same day, and we complete any employer or regulator form you bring. If your employer needs the results sent directly, we can do so with your written consent. The fee for an employment hearing test is $155, which includes the report and form completion.

Good to know

Frequently asked employment hearing test questions

What hearing test does the RCMP require?

The RCMP requires an audiogram as part of its medical assessment, completed by a hearing professional, on the RCMP's form. Bring the form and we will complete it at your appointment.

Is an employment hearing test free?

No. Our complimentary hearing test is for anyone 55 and over who wants to check their hearing. Employment tests include a signed report and completion of your employer's form, and are charged at $155. Many employers reimburse the cost.

What if I do not pass?

A hearing test does not pass or fail on its own; each employer or regulator sets its own standard. If your results fall outside the standard, we explain what the numbers mean, along with our recommendations.

How soon can I get an appointment?

Usually within the week. Tell us when you book that it is for employment, and bring the form your employer or regulator needs completed. We fill it in, but we cannot supply it.

Do you do hearing tests for groups of employees?

Yes. We take block bookings for groups of employees and can come on site. Contact us to arrange it.
